Ku'uipo
We are called the Boo Boo Zoo because we take in animals who would be put down if they were taken to the Human Society or and adoption center. We often get cats from the vet because someone brought them in but couldn’t afford their treatment and wouldn’t take them home. So when a cat first arrives I always give them special attention and love to help them adjust.
Some cats are extra special. Like Sweetie and Little Christina, who have their own stories with happy endings. And Ku’uipo. She was given up by her owner, I don’t know why and I didn’t ask because I find it so hard to understand how anyone could do that. It’s better I don’t know and don’t judge. But Ku’uipo was now with us and in a kennel because she can’t walk properly, she topples over. She has a neurological disease that makes her unable to control her muscles. She has difficulty walking, standing, getting into the litter box. The vet said she has probably had it all her life, it happens in utero if the mother has a certain condition.
For a couple of weeks I would come every day to clean out Ku’uipo’s kennel - it becomes quite a mess because kitty litter gets thrown all around. And I would hold and pet her until she finally relaxed. Veni would also come in every day and give her special attention. After a few weeks Veni decided to let her out in the room. Ku’uipo stumbled around and fell but she steadily and quickly improved. Now she is out most of the time and she can get into the big litter box without making too much of a mess. She used to be afraid of all the other kitties but now she nuzzles Sleepy and she is pretty relaxed with the others. I’m so glad Veni thought to let her out. She actually moves pretty fast when she wants to. She can get up and down the one step quite easily.
