Today Veni called me to tell me there was a new kitty and she needed to be hand fed. She had been grabbed and shaken by a dog and she was traumatized and had an infection. When I arrived she was moaning. When I pet her gently she would stop moaning. She is so small and frail and she can hardly lift her head. She had been at the vet for a few days already and her delicate little leg was shaved for the IV. Caroline was there and she fed her and the little kitty ate quite a bit. But as soon as we left she started moaning again. A soft, guttural little moan. It was breaking my heart. I had a feeling she wasn't going to make if we didn't make a change for her.
She needed a different circumstance for at least a few days. She needed round the clock care, constant companionship, love and affection, if she was going to pull through. Caroline and I tried to think of what we could do. I couldn't take her because I was going to the mainland in two days and she needed round the clock care. Caroline couldn't take her because the refuge was filled with critical care animals and there was nowhere quiet and peaceful we could keep her where Caroline could be with her regularly. We thought of Marcia. She already had so many cats, but maybe she could take this little one for a few days. Marcia is an experienced foster mom and she can administer medicine and feed her by hand. Marcia is an experienced, compassionate care giver. I was feeling desperate and on the verge of tears. I had already cried a few times and I was struggling to stay strong and balanced.
We went to fetch Marcia, she came in, walked directly to the kennel, scooped up the little kitty in one hand, looked into her eyes and announced she was going to be absolutely fine. Marcia would take her home for a few days and shower her with love. At this point I started crying pretty hard. I couldn't talk. I was so relieved. Caroline assured Marcia that I was crying from happiness now.
I stayed with the kitty for another 30 minutes or so, until a little before 6pm when Marcia would come to pick her up.
